2 minutes 2011 Reflection

This is our outline before we created our video




This is our first draft of our 2 minutes video

This is the final version of our video. What we did to improve our video was we made the slides stay longer on the screen for people to read better and so that we could reach the given time since we were under 2 minutes. The comments really helped us with improving our final draft so we kew what we needed to do to make the video better. We contacted a couple people but none of them got back to us before we could start our video. I think my groups greatest success was raising money. We raised $150.00 in almost an hour. The skills that I would take and use in the future would be helping with issues in the world and to get other people involved. What was frustrating about making our movie was finding pictures about our topic because there wasn't many pictures that could help us. We also wanted to find pictures that would make the viewers stop and actually think about the cause in Africa. The strategies we used to become successful were that we never gave up. We wanted to make our video the best it can be, so we would always get together and tell each other what we liked and what should change. We also put ourselves in the audiences positions and say what THEY would think when watching. What's important is that it's a big part of our grade and it's also to show other people that we can help and make a difference. In the future I will make a difference by always remembering that some people have it way worse than we do. Some don't get to experience what other people do. And so, I will help by donating to people that are fundraising.

Allison's Algebra Post

Terms to remember: Constant: The integer in an expression or equation
Example: a + 4

Variable: The letter that represents an unknown number
Example: a, x, y, k

Equation: Has an equal sign with only one possible answer
Example: 2a= 4

Expression: Is a pattern and has many different answers
Example: 2x

Alge-Tiles:

The 3 variables represent 3x.
The 12 tiles represent 12.

To solve one step equations you must isolate the variable you must cancel the constant by using the opposite operation or cancelling it out with a zero pair.
After cancelling the constant you must remember to balance the equation. That means whatever you do to one side you must do to the other side.

Lastly you must verify your answer to see if it is correct. Example:

x+8(-8)=28(-8)
x= 20
VERIFY:
x+8=28

20+8=28

28=28


Subrtraction-

x-2=3

x-2(+2)=3

Allison's Great Big Book Of Integers

Chapter 1: Grade 7 Integer Review
  • To solve integers problems you can use number lines or integer chips
  • Usually red chips represent positive numbers and blue chips represent negative numbers
  • A zero pair is one negative and one positive together
A rule to remember about zero pairs are, " When subtracting something that isn't there, use a zero pair"

Here are some examples or subtracting and addition questions on integers:

Chapter 2: Multiplying Integers

  • When multiplying integers always remember "The Sign Rule" .
    The rule is that if there is an odd numbers of negatives in the question, the answer will be a negative number.If there is an even numbers of negatives in the question, the product will be a positive. If there is only positives the answer will always be a positive.
  • You can also use number lines to show your answer.
  • Use the following examples to help you:


Chapter 3: Dividing Integers
  • Partitive Division is when you know the total number of groups, and you are trying to find the number of items in each group.
  • Quotitive Division is when you know the total items that are in each group and you're trying to find the number of groups & sharing you total with groups.


QUOTITIVE DIVISION



The sign rule of addition, subtraction and multiplication also applies to division. For example:
  • 6÷2= 3
    there are no negative signs therefore the answer will be a positive.
  • (-6)÷(-2)= +3
    there is an even number of negatives meaning the answer will be a positive.
  • (-6)÷2=-3
    there is an odd number of negatives so they answer will be a negative
  • 6÷(-2)=-3
    the same goes for this.

Final Percent Post

Percent means out of a hundred. It's another name for hundredths. They can be represented as a fraction or a decimal.
This chapter, we did percents. We have learned a lot from, showing percents on a hundred grid(s), converting them into decimals and fractions, combining percents and a percent of a number.

We first learned about representing percents. You can have percents from less than 0 to more than 100 on a grid . The percents involve fractions as well.

The next thing we learned about fractions were converting them into fractions and decimals.
Example: convert the following into a decimal and percents .
a) 3/40 = 0.075
the numerator divided by the denominator and you get the decimal .
b) 0.075 x 100 = 7.5


4.3 was finding a percent of a number. I like to use the ratio grid to find the percent .
example: whatever you do one side, you do to the other side.


The last thing we learned about percents were combining them . I thought this was really easy.

Allison Manuel's Pay It Forward .

Part 1 :
Pay it forward, is doing something nice for 3 people. Those 3 people you have helped/ done something nice for will help another 3 people. It will branch out and the numbers of people you have helped gets bigger and bigger.

Part 2 :
For my Pay It Forward project, my group (Melanie Ilagan, Jocelle Garcia, Kristel Aguason and I), we decided to raise money for
Siloam Mission, which is a charity for homeless people. Everyday at school we asked if people would like to donate money. As a little gift, we chose to give them a candy cane, as a little treat since Christmas is near . We chose this activity because as Christmas is coming, we wanted to give money for people who aren't as fortune as we are, to celebrate this holiday, have a place to sleep and have food. My group and I did our project, from Monday December 13, 2010 until Saturday December 18, 2010. Before we would leave to go home, we would record how much we earned that day.
On December 18, 2010, we went to Superstore and decided to fund raise money there. We stood near the entrance/ exit doors for where people were coming into and out of the store . We did really well, for only 1 and a half - 2 hours of work . A man that works at Superstore, had told us to do some singing, to get peoples attention, so once in a while, we would sing some carols .
Part 3:
From Monday, December 13 until Saturday, December 18, my group (Melanie Ilagan, Jocelle Garcia, Kristel Aguason and I) raised money each day at school. We told the staff and students it was an act of kindess to paying it forward. As a treat in return, we gave them candy canes. At the end of the day, we would count how much money we earned, and we'd record how much we got. That went on all school week. On December 15 (Wednesday) my group and I gathered at my house to call Superstore to ask for permission to fun money there. We originally planned to do it at Polo Park, but we weren't allowed because we could have gotten our money stolen. On December 18 (Saturday) we met up at my house around 11:30 am and finished some centers and coloured our poster. At 12:30 we left the house and my daddy dropped us off at Superstore on Sargent. We then informed the office we were here. We stood near the entrance and asked the people who were coming in/ leaving if they'd like to donate. Our words were, " Hi, would you like to donate to SIloam Mission? ". Sometime when we would tell them to "Pay it forward". After they'd ask what all this would do in the end. We explained how it was a project of showing an act of kindness, so we decided to raise money for charity. After the first half and hour we collected around $40.00 with the help of the people who decided to donate bills. Speaking of bills, there's one man we'd really like to acknowledge. This person just passed by us, when there was a big crowd. He dropped in a $20 bill. We thanked him, and the smile on our faces became bigger because we started off with doubts, not reaching our goal. But at the end when we counted our total, we were super happy. Anyways, after a while, we weren't doing as well as we started. People just walked by. Most people already donated, worked with the charity or donate to them already. People passed by and told us that we were doing an amazing job. This one man told us to keep it up. That meant a lo to us ! A man that worked at Superstore that was , you can say supervising us told us to sing Christmas carols. So we quietly sang, " All I want For Christmas Is You " and " Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer" . We would've sang other songs but we didn't know the lyrics to bunch of songs. People came again and donated more and more money. As the coins dropped in one by one *cling cling* the smiles on our faces grew bigger, knowing that all the money we collected was going towards people who needed it more than we did. Once again, we started getting less and less people donating. The man told us it would be better if we emphasized Siloam Mission. We had an extra poster with us so we wrote, " All profits will go towards Siloam Mission". That caught the customers attention. After working for an hour and a half we counted our money and got a total of $183.00. We were super happy. We wanted to see if we were able to raise money at Wal Mart, since it was so close. We walked there and went on an adventure to "Antarctica" since it was winter/ snowy/ cold. On our way there, I saw a homeless man on the other side. I didn't know weather to feel happy or sad. I had a mixed emotion because I felt sad knowing he won't be spending Christmas with his family. But at the same time I felt happy because we had just raised money and will be donating it toward people less fortunate. Well, after my experience, I had really felt how one person can really make a difference. In this case 4 people. I don't think most people realize that the smallest things can change a whole lot .

Part 4:
The idea of Pay It Forward is important because it helps realize that one person can make a difference to a whole bunch of people.
I believe that my project did make a difference to homeless people, because once we donated that money, it has helped a couple people to have a meal and have a proper place to sleep for a couple nights.

* My group and I have not donated the money to Siloam Mission, but we Will soon :)

Square Numbers and Square Roots .

  • Determine the square of a whole number
  • Determine the square root of a perfect square
A square number is the product of the same two numbers.
3 x 3 = 9 .
9 is the square number :)

A square number is also known as a perfect square. A number that is not a perfect square is called a non perfect square .

Allison's math profile .

I`m Allison and I can like/ dislike math at different times. The times I like math are when I understand what's happening, and what we're doing. I also like when we do different math activities. In class we learned a lot of this like probability, integers, adding fractions, converting decimals into precents, graphs, mean, median, mode and more. The assignments I liked were doing the blogs online, for what we learned that day to show other people and the textbook work, because after taking notes on the topic, we would do work, to learn more about it.

My favourite unit I learned about in grade 7 was fractions, because it was really easy to understand. Some parts were new to me, like adding fractions with unlike denominators, then having to fine the common denominator. I struggled a lot with the integers unit, because it just really confused me. This year, I'm gonna try to focus on integers, and get the hang of it.

So this year, for grade 8 I really want to do better than grade 7, and improve in my grades. I don't want to procrastinate at all. I want to do well on tests and study harder ! This year, I just want to learn new things to get ready for grade 9 .

This is my favourite post from grade 7 because, this was my first post to the blog, and because my classmates gave me feedback, and I improved throughout the year . Blogging for math class, helped me because when my classmates told me what I did good and what I could've done to make a better blog. I want to do well in blogging this year.
