Term 2 Reflection

Listen!

Term 2 Reflection

  • What did you do well on,
  • Where did you struggle and
  • How will you do better next term?
  • What did you learn about percent, surface area and volume?

On Term two I think I did pretty well on our math quizzes and unit tests and that’s because I started to really do my homework on the textbook that really made it easier on me when we had a test.

I really struggled on our online math homework, and my report card said I did too. I struggled on posting scribe post homework on time, commenting as much on the blog, and I was also lacking in scribe posts.

I will do better by doing more work online on the blog because that part really killed my mark for math. I posted some scribes late and never really commented and I decided to do all that more often.

I learned plenty of things about percent, surface area and volume. I learned that percent means out of 100 and is another name for hundredth. For surface area I learned about the area of a 2D and 3D shape. I learned a lot from volume, I learned how to use the formula properly.

Carl's Great Big Book of Integers

Chapter 1
Grade 7 Integers Review:

What we may remember.
  • "When subtracting something that isn't there use a zero pair."
  • A zero pair are 2 numbers that have the same value but opposite signs and adds up to zero
  • When subtracting or adding integers, you can use a number line or integer chips to help you. When you use chips, generally red symbolizes positive and blue symbolizes negative.
Math Questions :

1) -3 - (-7) = 4

2) -3 - 7 = -10

3) 3 - 7 = -4

4) 3 + 7 = 10

5) -3 + 7 = 4

Chapter 2
Multiplying Integers:

This is what we did in class. (Show example with images)

(+3) x (+2) = 6
(+3) x (-2) = -6
(-3) x (+2) = -6
(-3) x (-2) = 6

Sign Rule:

Even - When you have an even number of negative factors the product is POSITIVE.
Odd - When you have an odd number
of negative factors the product is NEGATIVE.

Chapter 3
Dividing Integers:

Partitive Division (show on number line)

How many groups of +2 are in 6?
6 ÷ 2= 3

-6 ÷ (-2)= 3
How many groups of -2 are in -6?

Quotative Division

Quotative Division is sharing.

(-6) ÷ 2 = -3
Share (-6) with 2 groups.

This would be an example of an image of Quotative Division.

Multiplicative Division

-6 ÷ -2 = 3

-3 x -2 = 6
-2 x -3 = 6

-6 ÷ 2 = -3
2 x -3 = -6
-3 x 2 = -6

Chapter 4
Order of Operations with Integers:

This is the order of calculations.

  1. Add brackets
  2. Do everything inside brackets first: "( )"
  3. Next is to do exponents: x2
  4. Then do multiplies and divides from left to right
  5. Lastly do the adds and subtracts from left to right

Answer
(+5) x (-3) + (-6) ÷ (+3) using B.E.D.M.A.S.

Step 1:

(+5) x (-3) + (-6) ÷ (+3)

Step 2:

[(+5) x (-3) ] + [ (-6) ÷ (+3)]

Step 3:

-15 + -2

Answer:

-17

Carl's Volume Scribe Post

Cylinder Volume and Volume problems

Here are the following examples of questions that I answered :

Section 7.3 : Pages 265-267

* height = 10cm

* diameter = 20.3cm
r = d/2
r = 20.3/2
r = 10.15cm

v = π x r x r x h
v = 3.14 x 10.15 x 10.15
v = 323.49cm2
v = 323.49 x 10

Final Answer : v = 3234.9cm3

Section 7.4 : Pages 272-275

* height = 10m
* diameter = 0.8 (inside) and 1 (outside)

Inside :
r = d/2
r = 0.8/2
r = 0.4

v = π x r x r x h
v = 3.14 x 0.4 x 0.4 x h
v = 0.5 x 10
v = 5m

Outside :
r = d/2
r = 1/2
r = 0.5

v = π x r x r x h
v = 3.14 x 0.5 x 0.5 x h
v = 0.78 x 10
v = 7.8m

We are trying to find a way to find the volume of the concrete needed to make the culvert. So what I did is that I took the total from the volume of the inside concrete and just subtracted from the total of the outside concrete.

Inside = 5m
Outside = 7.8m

What I did :
7.8 - 5m = 2.8m3

The concrete required to make the culvert is 2.8m3

Final Percent Post

What is a percent?
Percent
is a number out of 100. A hundred grid contains 100 squares, so for example if you colour 50 squares that is 50%.

4.1 Representing
Percents.

To represent a percent, you can use hundred grids because they are out of 100. A complete filled hundred grid represents 100%.

Here is an example of 100% in a hundreds grid.

If the percent is greater than 100 you will have to shade more than one grid. To represent a percent between 0% and 1%, shade part of one square from the hundred grid.

4.2 Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

Percents can be represented as fractions and decimals. To convert a percent to a decimal, you must divide the percent by 100. To convert a decimal into a fraction, you write the decimal as the numerator. However, the denominator depends on the place value of the decimal.

4.3 Percent of a Number.

You can use strategies like halving, doubling, and dividing by ten to finds of numbers.
When calculating the percent of a number, convert the percent to a decimal, and multiply it by the number.

4.4 Combining Percents.

Percents can be put together by adding to solve questions. To calculate the increase in a number, you can add the combined percent amount to the original number. You can multiply the original number by a single percent greater than 100.

Carl Jamora's Pay it Forward

Part 1

What is "Pay it Forward"?
Pay it Forward is an idea where you volunteer to help someone while expecting nothing but for that person to help another person in return. This brilliant thought came by 11 year old Trevor in the movie 'Pay it Forward'. In this movie, Trevor's social studies teacher, Mr. Simonet, gives his whole class an assignment to come up with a way that will somehow change the world. Trevor's way of paying it forward was to help 3 people and ask them to "pay it forward" to 3 other people, and at the end they would ask nothing but to just pay it forward.

Part 2

What was your "Pay It Forward" act of kindness?
My act of kindness for "Pay it Forward" was helping the custodians clean the school of Sargent Park.

Why did you choose this activity?
I chose to do this activity because I wanted to do an activity with my friends, and being a janitor is hard because you have to keep cleaning up on a daily basis, so I decided to help out.

Who did you help?
I helped the janitors of Sargent Park School.

What did you do?
Me & my friends were cleaning the whole school, we all split up and had our own duties. I had the washroom and I had to clean the sinks and toilets and did a little clean up on the hallways too.

When did you do your act of kindness?
I did my act of kindness on December 18, 2010.

Part 3

How did your act of kindness go?
I think that my act of kindness went along smoothly. It wasn't what I planned would've happened, everything was fine. I really thought that we were going to have a problem but at the end it was okay. It was exhausting, but we all had fun cleaning up the school.

What happened?
Not that much, my friends and I just did a lot of cleaning to help out the custodians.. it was worth it.

How did you feel?
I felt happy knowing that I have helped someone and made their lives a bit easier then it would be.

How did the person or people react?
The person I brought the food to was glad but she didn't say much other than "Thank you" and "Just put it over there".

Did you ask the person or people to "Pay it Forward"?
After we finished, my friends and I asked nothing but to "Pay it Forward". So yes, I did ask.

Part 4

Why is the idea of "Pay it Forward" important?
I think that "Pay it Forward" is important because people may start helping or get helped more often and people might start thinking of other before themselves more then we can all help.

Has your act of kindness made a difference?
I think my own act of kindness made a difference to the janitors, because I would be a bit pissed if I had to clean messes again and again.

Carl's Homeworkbook Scibe Post

I have chosen to do the questions 4,7, and 8 in the homework book on page 33.
4. 6m2-1m2=h
36m-1m=35m
✓35m=5.9m

The ladder reaches 5.9m up the wall.

7. width=17cm
length=26cm
diagonal line=31cm
17cm2+26cm2=31cm2
289cm+676cm=961cm.

The quadrilateral is not a rectangle because 289cm +676cm does not equal 961cm, it equals 965.

8. 20 km/h for 10h west equals 200km
20 km/h for 7 1/2h south equals 150km
200km2 +150km2=?
40,000km + 22,500km= 62500km
✓62,500km =250km2

The ship is 250km away from the port.

My group was made up of Melanie, Kristel, and Me.

Ratio
:

Two term ratio- compares two quantities measured in the same units.
ex. 2:3

Three term ratio- compares three quantities measured in the same units.
ex. 2:3:4

Part to part ratio- compares different parts of a group to another part of the same group.
ex. 4:2

This is a diagram
:

Rates:
rate- compares two quantities measured in different units.
ex. 2m/8hr

unit rate- a rate in which the second term is one.
ex. 3km/1m
unit price- a unit rate used when shopping.
ex.$4/5pencil

This is a diagram.

Proportional Reasoning:
-Is a relationship that says that two ratios or two rates are equal.
example- 1/2 = 2/4

This was the video that Melanie, Kristel and I were planning to do.

And.. This was our remake :) .. ENJOY.

Josell's Math Profile

I`m Josell/Carl and I sometimes like or dislike math at different times. The times I like math are when I understand what's happening, and what we're doing. I also like when we do different math activities. In class we learned a lot that I never knew before such as, adding fractions and using decimals. The assignments I liked were doing the work on the textbooks, because it helps me excerise my brain for the next math lessons.

My favourite unit I learned about in grade 7 was using decimals, because it was hard for me to understand, and I love taking challenges. Everything was new to me, I never really used decimals in math in my past grades. This year, I'm gonna focus more on adding fractions because I had lots of difficulties on that subject.

So this year, for grade 8 I really want to do better than grade 7, and improve in my grades. I don't want to procrastinate at all. I want to do way better than my tests last year and hopefully bump up my grades a bit.

I did a blog before but I can't find the link, it was my first post. I liked how my classmates gave me good feedback and some mistakes which really helped me. I want to do well in blogging this year, because last year I only did 1.
