Sam's Volume Post
Cylinder Volume and Volume Problems

Section 7.3

The formula for solving a cylinder problem is π.r.r.h .

the height of the Capture envelope is 10.15
the diameter of the Capture envelope is 23.3

r=d/2
r=23.3/2
r=10.15

v=π.r.r.h
v=3.14x10.15x10.15x10
v=3234.9cm^3

The volume of the Capture Envelope is 3234.9cm^3 !!!!!!

Section 7.4

The formula for a triangular prism is bxh1xh2/2

height of the chocolate bar is 5cm
base of chocolate bar is 5.6cm
length of chocolate bar is 20cm

v=bxh1xh2/2
v=5.6x5x20/2
v=280cm^3
v=280x64
v=17,920cm^3

The volume of the chocolate display is 17,920cm^3 !!!!!!

Pay It Forward

Part 1

Pay it forward is doing a random act of kindness for someone, without expecting anything else in return. The idea comes from a movie called "Pay it Forward" about a boy whose teacher assigns the class to do a good deed to change the world. This boy does a good deed for his teacher and asks him to pay it forward and do something nice for someone else. This sets off a chain reaction of kindness.

Part 2

For Pay it Forward I volunteered at our church's food bank on Gertrude St., on Monday, Dec. 20. I wanted to do this as my project because my dad is involved and I like to meet new people. This food bank is held every other Monday and there are 27 people that attend. The same people attend every time and they line up at the door and at 6:00pm we let everybody in to get their number. Whoever is there first gets number one and goes to get their food first.
Pierre and Simone are the Food Bank Coordinators

This time I helped in the bread and dessert station where people take one loaf of bread and choose one dessert item. While I was working, my mouth was just watering over some yummy glazed cinnamon rolls. Mmmm, my favorite! At this station, my job was to tell people what they could and could not take. This was also the last station, so I got to wish them a Merry Christmas and say good-bye.

Part 3

While people were waiting for their food they could sit around tables and eat goodies and drink coffee. They have become friends with one another. I thought it was neat how all of us were like a community in that we all care for each other and we return dignity and respect to the people who are sometimes forgotten by society. I was surprised how friendly and grateful everyone was.
I think if I couldn't provide for my family and had to use a food bank I would feel guilt and shame. I hope that volunteering at this food bank and encouraging these people can strengthen their dignity and bring them joy and peace.

Part 4

I think paying it forward is important because it encourages people to live for more than just themselves. I think this project helped me realize that it's not all about me, but that there are others that really need love and support.

Sam's Pythagras Scribe post

Answers to 3, 8, 11, 16.

3. Kendra is wrong because 'p' is the hypotenuse.

8. If the triangle shown in the text book is a right angle than hypotenuse should be 60cm² because 20cm²+40cm² =60cm² .

11. a² + b² = c²

(6x6) + (5x5) = 8x8

36cm² + 25cm² = 61cm²

61cm² = 64cm²

-Since 61cm² does not equal 64cm² it is not a right triangle.

16. a² + b² = c²

(12x12) + (20x20) = c²

144cm² + 400cm² = 544cm²

√544cm² = 23.32cm

-Baldeep can be sure his box can be square by measuring the hypotenuse.

Sam's Math Profile

Hi, I'm Sam and I'm in grade 8. When people ask me if I like math I always say I like it but I'm not that good at it because math doesn't run in the family. My parents always tell me how much they struggled in math. I am starting to like it more and more though. In math class the best thing I have ever done is when I was in grade 2 and Mrs. Collins threw this ball with numbers on it and whichever numbers your thumbs landed on you had to add, subtract, or multiply. I liked doing this because it was active. We always fought over the ball and it was a method of learning that I liked.
In grade 7 I really liked the probability unit because I realized in multiple choice tests I had a one in four chance of getting the answer right (lol). I think I did well because it applied to everyday life. I think the fraction unit was the hardest for me to understand because it was hard for me to change fractions to decimals and stuff like that. This year I will try to pay more attention and try as hard as I can to read the questions over to myself.

This year I will study a while ahead of time and I will not procrastinate on my homework. If I'm not understanding something that we're talking about in class I will ask questions about it until I actually do understand it. This year I want to learn whatever the unit we are doing to the full extent.

I don't remember the favorite post that I created last year because that was definitly a while ago. I think blogging helped me become a better student because either if I was sick or I had some kind of game or appointment I could just check the blog. This year I would like to improve the speed of my typing, visit any sites that would improve my math skills wether its division or fractions, and talk to people on the chat box about math. I am exited to make that video also.
