Kristel's 2 Minutes 2011 Reflection

First Draft

Final Draft

The changes we've made to make our final draft is added more information about suggestions you could do to make a difference and we talked more about what we did. We also made our slides longer so people could read what we wrote on our slides without having to rush. More pictures were included and we made our fonts all the same on our slides so it wouldn't be distracting.

My group and I didn't find an expert although we tried several times. We phone World Vision and a lady answered and told to phone the next day in the afternoon. So, when that day came we phoned them but no one answered this time. We kept trying to phone the days after but we had no luck. Then, we tried phoning other organizations but no one seemed to be picking their phone up.

The greatest success of our project is raising the amount of money we did in little time. We raise $150.00 in about 45 minutes. We wanted to stay longer but we were no longer allowed to raise money so we had to leave. Skills that I will take away with me into the future is knowing how to raise money and giving it to organizations that will help people in need.

The things that frustrated me the most was not being able to find an expert, finding pictures that matched what we were talking about and editing our final product. To be successful, we all worked on our project together everyday making it the best it could be. The two people that knew how to edit our video, edited the video and the other two people looked for more pictures and tried phoning other organizations. It worked out well and we got through things easier without having to stress that much.

This Two Minutes project is important to us grade 8 students because we want to help those in need. We know that there are so many people out there that have it way worse than us. We want to show others that a difference can be made and we want to encourage other people to make a difference. Doing this project will also spread word around about the issues happening in our world and telling people how it should change. In the future, to make a difference I will donate clothes and money to organizations helping those in need. I will make people aware of certain things happening.

Kristel's Algebra Post

Solving One-Step Equations:

Variable - Is a letter that represents an unknown number in algebra Ex. a, g, x, n
Constant - Is the integer in an expression or equation Ex. x + 6
Equation - Has an equal sign and has only one possible answer Ex. 2x = 6
Expression - Is a pattern and has many different answers Ex. 2x

Alge Tiles:

To solve a one-step equation, the first thing you need to do is isolate the variable. To isolate the variable you need to get rid of the constant by using a zero pair or cancelling it out by using the opposite operation.

The next step is to balance it, which means whatever you do on one side of the equation sign, you have to do it on the other side of the equation sign.

The last step is to verify which is simply checking if your answer is correct.

Example:

Example:

Example:

Solving Two-Step Equations:

To solve two-step equations you need to Isolate the variable, Cancel the constant, Balance, Simplify the variable, Balance and Verify

Term 2 Reflection

Listen!

For term 2, I think did well on finding volume because i knew how to find the answer. The thing I struggled on was finding the surface area of a cylinder because I couldn’t remember the formulas and i kept leaving steps out. To do better next term I will try to finish all of my textbook homework on time. When it comes it percents, surface area and volume, I forgot how to do percents because I was doing textbook work about it in the Philippines and I wasn’t so sure if i was doing it right. I’ll need to revisit that again. But for surface area and volume, I learned the formulas on how to get the correct answer.

The difference between surface area and volume is that surface area is the area of a flat surface or the outside layer of an object and Surface area is two dimensional. While volume is the amount of space it occupies in an object and it is three dimensional.

Kristel's Great Big Book of Integers

Chapter 1: Grade 7 Integer Review

-Positive and Negative. When they are combined it makes a zero pair
-Number lines and integer chips can be used
-"When subtracting something that isn't there, use a zero pair"

Examples:

-3 - (-7) = 4

-3 - 7 = -10

3 - 7 = -4

3 + 7 = 10

-3 + 7 = 4

Chapter 2: Multiplying Integers

There is something that would help you multiplying integers and it is The Sign Rule:

The sign rule says that when you have an even number of negative factors the product is positive and when you have an odd number of negative pactors the product is negative.

Examples:

1. (+2) x (+3)= 6

2.(+2) x (-3)= -6

3. (-2) x (+3)= -6

4. (-2) x (-3)= 6

Chapter 3: Dividing Integers

Dividing Integers:

Partative division is figuring out how many groups there are and how many integers are in that group.

Quotative division is knowing how many integers go equally into a certain number of groups

The rule for division is: When there is one negative sign or odd number of negative signs the quotient is negative

6÷2= 3
^ The answer is +3 because there are no negative signs

-6÷ (-2)= 3
^ The answer is +3 because there is an even number of negative signs

(-6)÷2= -3
^ The answer is -3 because there is an odd number of negative signs

6÷(-2)= -3
^ The answer is -3 because there is an odd number of negative signs

Chapter 4: Order of Operations with Integers

(+5) x (-3) + (-6) ÷ (+3)=
[(+5) x (-3)] + [(-6) ÷ (+3)]=
(-15) + (-2) = -17

^^ Use BEDMAS: Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction

1. Put square brackets around anything that needs to be multiplied or divided because that shows you it needs to be done first.

2. Solve what is in the square brackets and re write everything.

3. Go through the equation left to right using BEDMAS, solve and re write until you get to your answer.

Kristel's Volume Scribe Post

3. Determine the volume of each right prism or cylinder.

a) v= area of base x height
15 cm2 x 4 cm
60 cm3

b) v= area of base x height
18 cm2 x 12 cm
216 cm3

c) v= area of base x height
96 cm2 x 20 cm
1920 cm3

9. How many ways can you build a rectangular prism from 16 centimeter cubes? Use diagrams or centimeter cubes to show your designs.

You can build 4 designs:

1 - L = 16 cm, W = 1 cm, H = 1 cm

2 - L = 4 cm, W = 2 cm, H = 2 cm

3 - L = 8 cm, W = 1 cm, H = 2 cm

4 - L = 4 cm, W = 1 cm, H = 4 cm

11. José is having vegetable soup. The area of the base of the soup can is 10.4 cm2, and the height is 10 cm. When José opens the can, he sees that the soup comes up to a height of only 9 cm. What volume of soup is in the can?

v = Area of base x height
10. 4 cm2 x 9 cm
93.60 cm3

15. The International Space Station is shaped like a cylinder that has a cross-sectional area of 615 m2 and a length of 44.5 m. The living space for the astronauts is 425 m3. What percent of the volume of the space station is used for living?

I had trouble figuring out things question. Please leave a comment and help explain to me how to figure it out!

Kristel's Pay it Forward

Part 1:
Pay it forward is doing an act of kindness to help someone else and not expecting anything in return. This idea came from the movie “Pay it Forward” In this movie, a boy named Trevor has an assignment to make a difference in the world. So what he decided to do is do something for 3 people. Those three people have to do something nice for another three people, then the next three people do the same thing. As you see the numbers get larger every time.

Part 2:
For my Pay it Forward project my group, Melanie Ilagan, Jocelle Garcia, Allison Manuel and I raised money for Siloam Mission. Everyday weekday we went around Sargent Park School asking for donations and on Saturday we went to Superstore. In return we gave them candy canes and chocolate to thank them for their kindness in donating to a good cause. We decided to do this so we can help other people who can’t don’t have all their needs met.

Part 3:

While at school we collected around $42. My group and I didn’t think it was much since our goal was $100. While we were at Super Store we stayed by the entrance/exit doors for about 1-2 hours. We made $183! I was extremely happy, and shocked of how well we did in such a short period of time. I didn’t think we would reach our goal but we did and made twice as much as our goal! We have all the money but have not gave it to Siloam Mission. We will sometime during the week. The people who passed us seemed shocked about what we were doing. At the same time, the seemed really glad with what we were doing. There were lots of people giving us ideas on how to attract more people. One man who worked at Super Store told us to say what charity we were giving the money too. One lady told us to write Siloam Mission on our poster. Another lady told us to sing Christmas songs. So we took all of their advice and it did make a difference! The other thing that made a difference was our poster. People would walk by and take a glimpse of our poster. Once they read it they changed their mind and donated. On our poster it said “Make a difference. Pay it forward. We are learning about how one person can make a difference. All proceeds will go to charity” and there was another poster saying it’s all going to Siloam Mission. So I think our act of kindness went very well and I’m proud of what we did.

Part 4:
The idea of “Pay it Forward” is important because it shows us that one person CAN make a difference and nothing is impossible. I know my act of kindness will make a difference as soon as my group and I give the money to Siloam Mission. It will allow a few homeless people to have a meal to eat and a safe place to sleep and a shelter to stay for a while. It will mean a lot to them especially because it’s almost Christmas and everyone deserves to be happy.

Kristel's Triangle Scribe Post

This is a right triangle because it has a right angle (90 degrees).

A triangle has 3 sides. The horizontal and vertical line are the legs.
The diagonal line is called the hypotenuse.

Side b is 3 cm, side a is 4 cm an and side c, the hypotenuse is unknown.

To find how long the hypotenuse is you can measure it with a ruler or use a formula called Pythagorean Theorem.

The formula is a squared + b squared = c squared.

This is how you would use the formula with this right triangle-

a squared + b squared = c squared
(4 cm squared) + (3 cm squared) = c squared
16 cm squared+ 9 cm squared = c squared
25 cm squared = c squared (with square root over both of them
5 cm = c

Kristel's Math Profile

My name is Kristel, I am in grade 8 math. If someone were to ask me if I liked math I would say that I dislike it a lot. I never liked it because out of all my subjects, math was the hardest for me to do. The best thing I ever did in a math class was learn how to subtract. It was really fun because we used cookies to help us and we got to eat them after!

My favourite thing to do in grade 7 math was to find the range, outlier, mean, median, and mode in a data set. I think I liked it best because it's the one I understand the most so it was the easiest for me to do. A unit that made me struggle was solving two- step algebraic questions because even if the teacher would explain to me many times I still couldn't get a head start. Something I can do this year that'll help me not struggle is to ask other people than the teacher and to practice practice practice.

To make me a successful math student in grade 8 I will try to participate more in the discussions I have by putting my hand up more. Also I would also like to get in the habit to always read my math notes so it's always in my head. There's nothing specific I would like to learn but I just want to be ready for the future.

Last year, I blogged several times but this is my favourite blog. Blogging helped me become a better student because once I did one blog I thought it was really fun. So, I decided to do it more which made me more invloved in what was going on. This year, I want to continue blogging posts.
