Roemer's Term 2 Reflection

This term we learned about percents. I found percents easy because I fund it easy and I think I will do good on the final exam. Also, we learned about Surface Area and Volume. Surface area and volume are our almost exactly alike. Only difference is on surface area, you want to find thetotal area of the shape, but in volume, you only have to find the "inside" area.I found this struggling in the beginning, but not anymore. With a little practise, I got much better. Math is usually one of my strongest subjects, but this term, I think I only got average. Next term, I will work 110% harder by completing homework, and getting better score test.

Roemer's Volume Scribe Post

7.3

Height = 10cm
Diameter = 20.3cm

r= d/2
r = 20.3 / 2
r = 10.5cm

v = π x r x r x h

v = 3.14 x 10.15 x 10.15

v = 323.49cm2
v = 323.49 x 10

v = 3234.9cm3

7.4

Height = 10m
Diameter = 0.8 (inside) and 1 (outside)

Inside -
r = d/2
r = 0.8/2
r = 0.4

v = π x r x r x h
v = 3.14 x 0.4 x 0.4 x h
v = 0.5 x 10
v = 5m

Outside -
r = d/2
r = 1/2
r = 0.5

v = π x r x r x h
v = 3.14 x 0.5 x 0.5 x h
v = 0.78 x 10
v = 7.8m

I tried to look for the volume of the concrete to build the Culvert. I basically just took the volume from the inside, and subtracted it from the volume in the outside.

7.8 - 5m = 2.8m3

Roemer's ScribePost

Homework was pages 78-79 on the homework book:
I do odds..

1.
a) Volume of a right cylinder or right prism is found by multiplying the area of the base and the height.

b) If you change the orientation, it does not affect the volume.
3. a) 9cm x 84cm
² = 758cm3
b) 3m x 54cm² = 162cm3

5. What is the volume of a right prism that has a ba
se with an area of 15cm² and a height of 7 cm?
15cm
²
x 7cm
------------
105cm3

7.
a) volume = 63 cm3 area of base = 9 cm

Final Percent Post

Definition of percent:
any number out of 100,that can be represented as a fraction and a decimal.

Key Points of Chapter 4

4.1

When showing a percent greater than 100%, use more than 1 grid.
When showing a percent less than 1%, but more than 0%, use only one grid.

4.2

Percents can be shown as a decimal and fraction.
50% = 1/2 and 0.5

4.3
To calculate a percent of a number,write it as a decimal and multiply it.
15 1/2% of 50= 0.125x50
= 6.25

4.4
To combine a percent, put them,or add them together.
ex.1% + 2% = 3%
To found out the increase in a number, add the combined percent to the original number.
5% + 7% = 12%

3.) Use mental math to determine each of the following:

a.) 300% of 2000 = 6000

b.) 1 1/4% of 60 = 0.75

c.) 0.1% of 40 = 0.04

6.)
What is the percent of each number? Give your answer to the nearest hundredth.

a.) 5/8% of 520 = 3.25

b.) 75 2/5% of 200 = 150.8

c.) 250% of $76.50 = $191.25

8. The original price of a jacket was $84.00. A store manager marked the price down by 25 1/2%. By how much was the price reduced?

Roemer's Pay It Forward.

Part:1
Pay it forward is when helping other strangers/friends without wanting anything back. The people you help,may possibly do the same to other people,and maybe like a chain reaction,and will cause this world to be better. In the movie "Pay It Forward",there was a small boy named Trevor who was given a project to try to change the world . He chose to help three people. The same three who were helped can help three more people, and on, and on.

Part 2:
My act of kindness was to donate $5.00 to the Siloam Mission. I chose this activity because I heard about the homeless people, and I wanted to help by donating money. I hopefully helped the homeless by donating, and we participated in activities there. Me and my partner (Justin) did this on December 19 2010.

(Met up with friend Nicholas who also donated.)

(Siloam Mission papers.)

Part:3
When we donated our money, they thanked us and gave us treats such as a Gingerbread house,and candy. I felt good donating money for the homeless, I was proud of myself for that. I asked them pay forward so they can learn about how to make kindly acts,without expecting anything in return.

Part:4
This "Pay It Forward" idea is important because the world can be less corrupt this way, and it will help our citizens. My act of kindness may possibly help someone.
ex.more food,clothes, etc.

Using the Pythagorean Relationship

Key Ideas Review.
Okay,so I'm doing odds,and I think Karen is doing evens.
Pg.30-31

1.The Pythagorean relationship can be used to determine the length of the hypotenuse of a right triangle when the lengths of the two legs are known. AGREE?

3.Determine the length of the hypotenuse.Show your work.
a)

k² + j² = l²
40
cm² + 9cm² = l²
(
40² x 40²) + (9² x 9²) = l²
1600
cm² + 81cm² = 1681cm²
√1681cm² = √l²
41cm
²

b)
p² + q² = r² 12m² + 35m² = r² (12² x 12² ) + (35² + 35²) = r²
144
m² + 1225m² = 1369m²
√1369m² = √r²
37cm²

5.Calculate the missing side length for each right triangle,to the nearest tenth of a centimeter.Show your work.
a)

w² + x² = y²
w² + 25² = 36²
11 = 25 - 36
√11 = 3.3
3.3²

b)

f² + g² = h²
7cm
² + g² = 12cm²
49cm² + g² = 144cm²
144cm
² - 49cm² = 95cm²
√95cm² = 9.7cm²
9.7cm
²

7.
A triangle is made up of two smaller congruent right triangles.

a)Find the Length of the hypotenuse for the right triangle,to the nearest tenth of a metre.Show your work.

4m
² + 2m² = b²
(4 x 4) + (2 x 2) = b
²
16m
² + 4m² = b²
√20m² = 4.5m
b = 4.5m

b)Calculate the perimeter of the large triangle,to the nearest tenth of a metre.Show your work.
I don't know how to do this one..Help?

Roemer's Math Profile.

Hello, my name is Roemer, and I'm in grade 8 math.I really like math,but some better than others. I really disliked the Area unit.I found it confusing,and very hard.I've never done that in the past,so it was probably too new for me.But wih studying,I did just fine.

In Grade 7,the units I enjoyed learning about was fractions.We did many activities,like spinning a spinner to see if it would land on yellow,green,red,or blue because each has 1/4 of a chance of the spinner landing on it. I really enjoyed that unit because I've done this many times before,and it was easy to get throught it.

This year I want to be a better math student. I can do this by answering questions and always pay attention in class. I can ask my friends or teacher for help when needed, and finish my assignments on time.I could also review my notes more to keep them in my mind incase of a test. I can't think of anything I want to learn, maybe how to do more-than-one-step algebra equations. I would be happy to learn new things that will help my math knowledge in the future.

I've done Math blogs in the past.Similar to this one right here. :) .I did these last year and enjoyed doing it.It was very fund to mess around with the COLORS and SIZE.I also did other stuff like making them look like this. I hope we do some more blog posts like this in the near future.
